My middle boy is sewing. I originally came across this idea in The Creative Family and decided last week that it would make an excellant Montessori lesson as well. Simply grab some burlap, an embroidery hoop, thread, and an eager student. I adore the look on concentration on his little face:
He sewed me a monster, "For your birthday, Mommy"
I assured him that it was one of my favorite birthday gifts ever. And it is, albeit 7 months early:
oh my goodness so sweet! my 3yo just started that last week too ( it took us forever to find burlap!) she sews while i sit and embroider. i love it!!

Oh how wonderful!
We've tried sewing cards and simple assisted felt sewing projects with Sophia, but she gets easily frustrated. I think she would like this as it is much more open ended.
We also had great success with your baster color transfer this weekend. I had some leftover KoolAid dye that I had been saving just in case and decided it was time for it to go. She spent about an hour mixing colors into bowls. :)

Christy, I'm so glad to hear that Sophia enjoyed the baster activity! I think most anything involving water is bound to be a hit. Let me know if you try "sewing" in this fashion too!
Nicole, *how* do you get her to sew long enough so that you can embroider? It seems like I no sooner get Short Pants started, walk away, and then have to come right back to get him more thread. He's a quick little devil. Maybe I need to make the thread longer.
